FROM 'CREDIDIMUS CARITATI'

Archbishop Lefebvre warns against the apparitions

Over the years of development of the Society of St. Pius X, its founder,
repeatedly used the messages of Our Lady of La Salette and Fatima to show
that the Blessed Virgin had warned against the dangers of our time she warned against
the dechristianization of societies and even some of the clergy. Shortly after the consecrations,
during a retreat he taught in 1989, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, however, wanted to put the
record straight and to guard against the abuse of these predictions. To Base one's faith on
appearances is dangerous, he said. It is a disease that could reflect negatively on our milieux:

"  There are those who feel obliged to report all occurrences,
even those that are not officially recognized by the Church and
their preaching is constantly supported by it, it seems that if
they did not have it, they would find it difficult to support, I would say,
what they are preaching. It's a shame because it's a little distortion
in the minds of the faithful. Apparitions are supplements that God wants to give us
through the Blessed Virgin, but that is not what should be the foundation of our spirituality
nor is it what should be the foundation of our faith . even if there was not the an apparition
the faith remains the same, and the foundations of our faith remain the same
so it is a bit dangerous to give the impression that without the apparitions they could
not stand before the current difficulties in the spiritual life. What a pity! This is dangerous.
And then, you know, the apparitions
for which there may be a probability
of intervention of the Blessed Virgin,
of miraculous intervention, there is a mob,
 messages, communications, incredible,
unbelievable, some more extravagant than
the others. I would almost say  that the
more extravagant, the more some believe.
This is very dangerous, very dangerous.
Certainly the devil makes use of it.
Finally it is a means for the devil
to almost turn souls away from the foundations of the faith, and to lead
into sentimentalism, to a piety that is not really based on faith, in Our Lord.
Personally, I've always been, I really tried to give in the seminary again these basic
fundamental principles of faith and avoid the introduction of too different appearances.
"They go to Fatima, we go to Lourdes, and eventually we go to pray individually in
San Damiano or Garabandal, good, at La Salette, very good! But we act again in
a kind of condition that if someone does not go, or if someone I do not know,
does not follow what one has heard, or message she received where it was in
these apparitions and we do not follow, then they are no longer Catholic,
one is no longer Christian if you do not follow his orders that are given by the so-called
Madonna by such person who has been there. It is impossible! this is unacceptable!
We can not be guided by these things, it is not possible! So we must be very, very, very, very careful,
and unfortunately, it must be said, this disease, if we can call it that, is growing tremendously
in traditionalist circles tremendously. Perhaps even more so in areas of Germany
and German-speaking Switzerland. I do not know why, I do not know what it is,
I do not know. But there are certainly in this environment a greater proportion
who receive these messages and all these extraordinary things.
"  So we must be careful in these sermons that we do not begin in this area
to divert the efforts of people, leaning on the traditional principles of the Church.
We should have this belief, and put it in the minds of the people the conviction
that the complete renewal of society, individuals, families will come only
through our Lord Jesus Christ. This really is the principle of St. Pius X.
And that is why the patronage of St. Pius X is so useful:  instaurare omnia in Christo.
Do not try to complicate the issue., it is useless to look elsewhere,
we must restore all things in Christ. And if Christ is preached,
everything will come, everything, everything, everything,
until the last consequences, until the Christianization of the whole society.
It comes through our Lord Jesus Christ. The more we preach our Lord Jesus Christ,
the more we preach his reign, the more we preach the dependence of the souls on
our Lord Jesus Christ and we will forward to the sanctification of individuals,
families and the sanctification of society. That is clear! We need not look elsewhere. "
Archbishop Lefebvre spoke more freely about this he was a devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary
and he regularly went to places she had blessed by her presence. Already the Lefebvre family regularly
left on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, where the father, René Lefebvre, served as a stretcher bearer.
The founder of the Society of St. Pius X never stopped.
